Book Design • Cover Design • Interior Layout • Typography
An official art book for one of the most beloved animated series of its generation. The Art of Rick and Morty goes behind the scenes of the show with exclusive sketches, storyboards, character designs, and production artwork from seasons one and two. Dark Horse Books brought me on to design the full book, from cover concept through interior layout and typography.
The standard cover uses a ghost-white pattern of characters and creatures on a light background, subtle and textural. The special edition glow-in-the-dark cover inverts that completely: the same illustration in fluorescent green on black, glowing in the dark. It's a genuinely fun piece of book design and one of the more memorable physical objects I've worked on. If you don't have one, get one.
The design challenge was finding a visual language that felt true to the show: loose, chaotic, and a little unhinged, while still functioning as a well-organized, readable art book. The interior layout had to accommodate wildly different content types: full-bleed illustration spreads, dense character reference grids, rough production sketches, storyboards, and long-form text.
Typography was a key creative decision throughout. The show has its own distinct handmade energy and the type needed to match it without tipping into parody. The result is a book that feels like it was designed by someone who actually loves Rick and Morty, not just licensed it.
The Art of Rick and Morty published with Dark Horse Books under license from Adult Swim. It's in print, it's in bookstores, and yes it glows in the dark!
